Steelhead Ironman 70.3 - Aug. 1, 2009

This past weekend we travelled to Benton Harbor, MI for Nick's half Ironman Triathalon, the Whirlpool Steelhead 70.3 Ironman. We had various different problems throughout the weekend, but were glad to be able to have a small "vacation."

The first issue we encountered in Benton Harbor was a Dodge Charger ran through a red light, and struck the front end of the truck. We were very fortunate actually, as the Charger was moving around 50 mph, and could have done some serious damage had it hit 1 second later on the side of the truck. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the truck was still drivable. Unfortunately, for the Charger it was not drivable. The driver was actually another triathlete, who we ran into many times on Saturday. He ended up being very friendly, and felt extremely bad about the accident.

Brooke did a great job in sleeping on the ride to Benton Harbor, and during the hour we had to wait for the police to show up at the accident, which meant she wasn't sleepy at all that night. I think she slept for about 2 hour total, which made the 4 a.m. wake up even more painful. However, she is still just so cute!

The start to the race was a mile walk down the beach! Too bad strollers don't work in the sand.

Nick is all geared up and ready to go! Too bad he had the wait 1 hr 45 minutes to start. They did 18 different heats, and he was in heat 17.

He did a great job in the swim (1.2 miles) finishing in 45 min 21 seconds. Due to the later start time the current had actual increased at this point!

After the swim, it was time for a 56 mile bike ride.

Nick averaged 21 mph on the bike!

He finished the bike in 2 hrs 40 min 5 seconds! (I must say I am quite impressed with my photography skills! I think I get better at each race, learning how to capture the pictures.)

Brooke was very cozy in her stroller all wrapped up in blankets for the whole race! She was quite the trooper.

After the bike, it was time for a 13.1 mile run, which Nick finished in 2 hrs, 4 min, and 28 seconds!

His total race time with the transitions was 5 hrs, 37 min, 33 seconds. His overall place was 571 out of ~1,800 people! This is also considering the fact that his later start time had an increased current in the water, higher winds on the bike, and it was pouring down race by the end of the run!

After all the excitement of the weekend, we were glad to be home safe and sound, and Brooke was very proud of her daddy! Do you like her shirt? "My Daddy Can Out Swim, Out Bike, Out Run Your Daddy!"
